 It is often desireable combine 2 or more rooms together to make one large uninterupted space. This is achieved by removing the partition walls that seperate the rooms which are to be combined. The problem is that the walls being removed often perform a structural role within the building supporting the rooms directly above them. When this is the case a steel beam is installed supported at each end allowing the walls below to be removed while supporting the rooms above.
